THE VALUE OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION | NECESSITIES AND VALUE OF EDUCATION

THE VALUE OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION. Within the content of religion, education has always been a means of transmitting the knowledge, skills and values of religion. This is evidence in the African traditional religion where every society, whether simple or complex has its own system of transmitting the culture of the society to the youths.
Judaism on its part received a commandment of transmitting her knowledge and culture to their young ones thus “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children and shalt talk to them when thou sits in thine house and when thou wackest by the way, and when thou liest down and when thou rises up "(Deut.6:7).

Also, a point to the trust and confidence in Abraham that he will command his children and his household after him, to keep the way of the Lord. (Gen.18:19). The Chief Shepherd of Christianity, our Lord Jesus Christ commanded the disciples to teach all nations before incorporating them into the fold through baptism in the name of the triune God. Hence, the establishment of any religion as well as its preservation depends on their involvement in education.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
(i) Education - This has been defined in various ways by different people which makes it difficult to have a universal definition. Possible reasons for this include that education could be viewed as an activity that goes on in any given society, whose aims and methods depends on the nature of the society in which it takes place. Therefore, since societies are different; their activities differ as well, hence, the non universal definition of education.

Every society has its way of living, thus a new born child into a given society must therefore inherit the societal way of life in his or her quest to survive. The process of acquiring these virtues is education. Education can therefore be seen as way of preserving the way of life in which a person believes. In summary, education is the transmission of the way of life of a particular society from generation to generation.
(ii) Christian - A Christian is one who believes in Jesus Christ and His teachings and further practice same.
(iii) Christian Education - This is the process of training and developing knowledge, skill of mind, and the life and character of the learner, whether in matters sacred or secular in an environment and in a manner that is truly Christ-centered, and in harmony with His will. It is also the type of education that help a person to obtain the goals of life set by Jesus Christ, it leads to the development of the whole individual in relation to his or her God, fellow man and environment.

Necessities of Christian Education
It is necessary to state that Christian education is concerned with three indispensables;
1. To help the learner to understand his personal need of Jesus Christ as savior.
2. To lead the learner into life of accepting Jesus Christ as his/her personal savior, and providing the conditions under which he/her may grow into perfect man/woman, into the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.
3. To lead the learner to consecration of his/her life to God for service.

Values of Christian Education
1. Christian education instructs and trains the individual in the knowledge of the scriptures and of Jesus Christ as the saviour and Lord. The agencies through which this function is achieved include the Church, the Christian home, the the Christian school as well as Sunday School,Day schools and Special schools.
2. It makes the individual grow into a matured Christian (Heb.5:12-16)
3. It helps the individual to understand the Christian way of life and be committed to it. (Deut. 4:10)
4. It leads the individual to the knowledge of God's will and to doing of His will.
5. Since God has revealed Himself through a process of both natural and written revelation, Christian education helps in its analysis; knowing fully well that this is the only source of truth.

CONCLUSION
Christian education is more than merely increasing our knowledge; for God gave us the Bible to apply, to put His word into practice everyday. This is confirmed thus “And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which is able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.; that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." (2Tim.3:15-17). May we be imparted with more grace to fulfill these tasks.
